The Shoemaker's Daughters
Dr. Máire Kennedy very kindly agreed to my giving yet another lecture, this time on Christopher Burgess and his family, at the family history day in the Dublin City Library and Archive on 24 March 2012. I have put up a backup page on this site from which much of the material that underpinned the presentation, and the presentation itself, can be accessed. I didn't actually have a full text script which was just as well as the presentation was being radically pruned right up to the night before. I have put up a copy of my "running order" which I used as a script on the day.

The Medlar's Gotcha
Dr. Máire Kennedy very kindly agreed to my giving a lecture on P J Medlar, City Councillor and Undertaker, at the family history day in the Dublin City Library and Archive on 27 March 2009. I have put up a backup page on this site from which much of the material that underpinned the presentation, and the presentation itself, can be accessed. I didn't actually have a full text script which was just as well as the presentation was being radically pruned right up to the night before.

WTF have I being doing in 2009?
There is an idea abroad that the pace of life slows dramatically when you retire. Rubbish. I have been so rushed since I retired that I have not had the time or inclination to update the updates since January last. I wouldn't even have known that except I just looked. My personal and cyber life has accelerated beyond the wildest dreams of the CERN collider. So, as a social service, I will attempt to list below some of the developments on this site in the course of 2009.

On the family history side, I have had significant breakthroughs in the search for Jane Dwyer (father's sister) and Thomas Mortimer (great-great-grandfather).

I have been following up the family of Michael Mortimer (25 Grenville St - in 1877), who may or may not be a relation and across the road from which is this appeal. Welcome to the Inner City.

Peggy Medlar
Following on further research on Peggy in newspaper archives and in the Irish Military Archive, I have taken the short entry on Peggy out of PJ's page and given her a page of her own, which she clearly deserves. I have also transferred the material on Larry (Paulstown) from PJ's to Peggy's page and added some material on Martin (Paulstown).

Cnag Cnag!
This is my new Irish language blog which I started with the intention of confining my Irish language blog posts to a separate blog and entering the blog in the new Oireachtas competition for a blog in Irish.

As you will see, I will be posting some family related stuff here as well.

There is already a lot of good stuff in Irish out there, so if any of the regulars enter the competition will be stiff indeed. Judging will be on the basis of posts done between the beginning of March and the end of June 2008. Posts will be judged on content, use of links and ability to attract viewers and comments.

So, tóg amach do pheann agus scrí cúpla focal, más moltach nó maslach, ceannsa nó cancarach, is cuma. Beidh fáilte rompu uile.

Paulstown
I have added a feature on Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny, which is where the Medlars are from. No doubt they were originally from somewhere else and this will be followed up in due course.

Patrick J Medlar
Patrick has now made his second appearance in Dublin folklore, so I have opened a folklore section in his cameo. Any further contributions will be very welcome. I have also added a list of the committees and boards on which he served, culled from the new Councillors Database in the Dublin City Archive.

Mary Anne on the shores of Turlough Bay
I have traced Mary Anne Conneely's parents' holding to the northern coast of Turlough Bay in Conemara. It is about a mile south-west of Inver Lodge, which is on an island in Loch Inbhir (Lough Invernagleragh). The holding is almost slap bang in the middle of the townland of Turlough and is separated from the remaining cluster of houses by the inlet. It is quite close to Pearse's Cottage. There is still some work to be done but you can get a good idea of the setup here
.

Old Dwyer Homestead in Cappanahanagh
Grandfather Michael Dwyer's origins have been confirmed to Cappanahanagh in East Limerick. Recent contact from Nora Meehan led to a visit to the area and a first report on that is included here. Cousin Michael Dwyer had alerted me to the Meehan's in Newport but I had not made contact until Nora found me.

[updated 13 February 2008]
I am in contact with Rita Kelly's side of that family and hope to be able to fill out the Michael Kelly/Bea O'Dwyer branch of my father's family soon. I am also promised material on the Fergusons (Mick Dwyer/Agnes Ferguson] including tantalising references to links to the British Royal family. Stay tuned for some royal icing.

[updated 13 February 2008]
I have made some progress tracing the birthplace of Mary Anne Conneely, my great grandmother (Patrick Mortimer's mother). You can see the latest on Inver Lodge here.

I have added some more people outside of Dublin to the Google map and you can checkout the national picture here.

[updated 30 December 2007]
Some more photos added to the work and live page for Flemings, Medlars, Ellen Brennan and Mick Dwyer. These have also been referenced in the info-windows in the Dublin map.

[updated 20 December 2007]

I've been doing some work on this, adding people, adding dates, distinguishing between direct ancestors and others, and putting a window at the top of the map to identify who is under the cursor. This has involved learning a bit more Javascript, which is fine. However, I nicked a lot of incompatible code from various sources and it took a lot of sorting out. Now that I have the hang of it I will carry on to the national map and give the non-Dubliners a deserved look in.

[updated 10 December 2007]
I have added another marker for Old Nick Fleming to the Google map now that Fr. Gerry has pinned him down to Cow Parlour at 12 Susan Tce. I have also added a marker for PJ Medlar at 154 James's St. were he was living, with his mother, step-father and brother, immediatley prior to his marriage.

[updated 2 September 2007]
I have inserted a link to a photo (postcard) of Mrs Finnegan's Drapers, where Paddy worked, into the page on Paddy Dwyer's drowning. This is courtesy of Damian, one of the webmasters of the excellent Ballinasloe website. This site has been revamped in recent times and the genealogy section is very active. You can see the thread relating to Paddy here.

[updated 13 August 2007]
I have added some more certs: my granny, Margaret Reilly/Dwyer's birth (1865) and death (1954) cert; and Nicholas P Fleming's marriage (1925) to Julia Kenny.

[updated 7 August 2007]
The family trees shown on the site excluded dates in order to prevent identity theft of living persons. This had a lot of disadvantages as these dates (and occupations) are of interest, particularly in the case of earlier generations. I have therefore run a second series of trees which contain dates and occupations but are limited to past generations. There are, unavoidably, some living persons included as I can only distinguish between generations and not individuals in this formatting exercise. Maith dhom.
Burgess   Mortimer   Dwyer   Fleming   Duffy   Medlar   Fitzsimons   Reilly   O'Brien

[updated 6 August 2007]
Fr. Gerry has also come up trumps with a photo of the inscription of John Dwyer's name on the Thiepval Memorial. This was taken by a parishioner of his who is interested in local/family history and is herself working on a history of Dolphin's Barn Parish. She took the photo on a recent visit to the memorial.

[updated 6 August 2007]
Fr. Gerry has come up trumps with a photo of 43-44 James's St. with Old Christopher in the doorway. This was taken between 1897 and 1905. The face in the window might just be John. I'll send round a bigger copy of it for ID purposes. The man standing in the left of the picture seems to be a postman having a cuppa.

[updated 15July 2007]
I have added whacks of certs to the cert page. I have excluded all living persons, and confined myself to the ancestors and those most closely connected to them. I do have other certs, for eg Flemings, & Duffys but I don't want to overclutter the internet.

Following representations from family members I have redrafted the Gaeilge item.
Changed text is in bold.

Gaeilge
An incidental result of my family history digging is that I appear to have struck the Irish language lode. My great grandfather and grandmother, Luke Reilly and Bridget Jordan, on my father's side, returned themselves in the 1901 census in Kiltimagh as being able to speak both Irish and English. They were both originally from Sligo; he was born in the 1820s and she in the 1830s. Meanwhile my great grandmother, on my mother's side, Mary Anne Conneely, seems to have come from Oughterard, near Rosmuc, and would in all likelihood have been fluent in Irish. That seems to be the only Irish in the line of my direct ancestors. My own connections with the language came about purely by accident when Synge St. CBS wouldn't have me and Coláiste Mhuire gave me asylum. There are other connections with the language, mainly in the teaching branches of the family, but I will expand on them in another context.

RIC
In a further update I have added a new page on the RIC, identifying four family members who were in the force. The page still needs some refining. Further research is also needed to pin down Ex Sergeant Thomas O'Brien.

Synchronicity
In the course of following up different strands of this research I kept coming back to the same places. This gave rise to the rather fanciful page on synchronicity, or coincidence of location.

Sergeant-Major John Burgess on the Somme
Did he fight at Leuze Wood, within 3 miles of where John P Dwyer lost his life at High Wood? Was Wolfgang's grandfather (medic) operating anywhere near there? Or, did he arrive in time for the battle of Loos (near Liège) and did he use any of the poison gas cylinders which might have been carried into place by John P the previous night?

Paddy Dwyer - found at last!
I have finally found material about Paddy's death which you can read in summary. You can see his death notice and read an extensive newspaper account of the inquest. Cousin Colette's story is proven to be substantially true. A lady's modesty took precedence over a boy's life and there was no small degree of sectarian bitterness involved as well.
