Wedi wedi marw

Observed in Trawsfynydd, Wales

On this plinth in Trawsfynydd, Wales, Hedd Wyn is reported to have died in English on July 30th 1917 and in Welsh on July 31st, despite Welsh being his first language. Perhaps word came by wire to the English base while the Welsh heartland had to wait for hardcopy. A colleague has drawn my attention to the possibility of his having died three times in all — twice in English, in Flanders and at the Eisteddfod.
